Ozma Labs is an independent research and development lab in Melbourne, Australia. It publishes formal research on graph-native cognition and builds the systems that research implies — theory and engineering held at once, deliberately.
The lab runs two threads that share one premise: the right structure makes hard things easy. One is a research programme on the substrate of cognition — the formal papers and the Ocelot substrate they formalise, up to the Jabberwock entity it enables. The other is an engineering programme on the systems around a desk, including the Ozma KVMA platform and the Bigville simulation.
Matthew has spent 25+ years building technology at every level of the stack: bare-metal administration, national telecommunications infrastructure, cloud architecture, Kubernetes, and security engineering. He has designed systems from scratch, led engineering teams, and spent years being the person other technical people call when they cannot solve something themselves.
His edge is holding the entire stack at once — from embedded Linux, audio DSP, and network security up through cloud infrastructure and product design, and across from systems engineering into formal theory. That range is what lets the lab hold research and engineering together: the work spans graph-native cognition, formal papers, and the systems those ideas imply, and it takes someone comfortable at every layer to keep them one body of work rather than separate silos.
Outside of technology: Matthew is a former volunteer firefighter who served for seven years and was awarded the National Emergency Medal for his service during the 2009 Victorian Bushfires. He is a Queen Scout. He is a former foster carer, and an adoptive father. He is building Ozma Labs in Melbourne, Australia.
